Pest Guide

Spiders Control

Most South African spiders are harmless — but a few species require urgent professional attention.

Signs of a Spiders Problem

  • Webs in corners, ceiling junctions, or behind furniture
  • Egg sacs (small papery balls attached to webs or surfaces)
  • Spiders visible in bathrooms, garages, or storage areas
  • Button spider (black widow) web — irregular, strong, near ground level
  • Bites with localised swelling, pain, or systemic symptoms

Professional Treatment Methods

  • Residual insecticide spray to web-building areas — corners, eaves, garages
  • Web removal and treatment of egg sacs to prevent hatching
  • Crack and crevice treatment of entry points and harbourage zones
  • Perimeter spray treatment for ongoing prevention

Spider Control in South Africa

South Africa has over 3,000 described spider species, the vast majority of which are completely harmless to humans. However, a few species of medical significance are found in and around homes, making professional identification and treatment worthwhile when populations are high or dangerous species are suspected.

Species of Concern

Button Spider (Latrodectus species) — South Africa’s most medically significant spider. Related to the black widow. Females are black with a red or orange hourglass marking on the abdomen. Builds untidy webs close to the ground in undisturbed areas. Bite causes Latrodectism — severe muscle cramps, sweating, and hypertension. Seek medical attention immediately if bitten.

Sac Spider (Cheiracanthium species) — pale yellow-green, active hunters rather than web builders. Responsible for the majority of spider bites in South Africa. Bites cause a burning sensation and localised necrosis in some cases.

Rain Spider (Palystes species) — large, intimidating but not medically significant. Often found indoors during wet weather. Relocation rather than extermination is recommended.

Prevention Tips

  • Reduce clutter in garages, storerooms, and under furniture
  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and pipe penetrations
  • Shake out shoes and clothing left on the floor, especially in summer
  • Keep outdoor lighting away from entry points (light attracts insects, which attract spiders)
